Hello all,
I'm trying to run the Synaptic Package Manager to update Firefox. When I start it up, I receive this Message: "Authentication Required to run Synaptic Package Manager".
I tried C= but that doesn't work. Does anyone here know what the password might be?
Thanks!

Hi DarkProgrammer,
Is this the default install?
Is your user name "Commodore"?
Did you change the password at any stage?

Hi LeoNigro
Thanks for your response.
Is this the default install? ---- YES
Is your user name "Commodore"? ---- YES
Did you change the password at any stage? ---- NO
The reason I'm trying to update Firefox is because they are sending out a message that the current version will not be usable on 3/14/2025 & they are urging everyone to install their new version.

While not having a password is kind of limiting, it won't affect anything to do with updating or installing via the command line on Commodore OS as long as your username is Commodore. The "Commodore" user is set as the superuser, and only graphical programs will kick up a fuss about the password.
Try this from the command line. You won't require a password to do an update.
Also, the Chromium browser is included in COS2, should Firefox cease to function (although that requires a password the first time it is run) in COS2.
That said, the new version of Commodore OS is expected to be released around midway in March should all continue to go well.
I do have something I googled that could help you but I've not tried it.

If you do set your password using this process be sure to let us know how you go.....
It's kinda scary if it works.....as it would mean no Linux machine is actually secure and that passwords are all security theater.
Even scarier if an encrypted drive is accessible.

Code: Select all
sudo checkaptgpg && sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tor.list
sudo apt update -y;sudo apt upgrade -y;sudo apt autoclean -y;sudo apt autoremove -y;sudo apt clean

Thank you for the instructions on using the command line to do the updates. everything worked fine!
I didn't try changing the password. If I do that, for sure, I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks again for your quick & very helpfull responses!
