Cannot run C64 software on vice
When installing Commodore OS vision 3 it is not possible to run .d64 floppy disk files because VICE emulator does not have the .BIN files with the necessary floppy disk drive models in the /usr/share/vice/DRIVERS folder.
Re: Cannot run C64 software on vice
Hi loumartian
Make sure you have done an online update before this procedure so you get the latest fixes.
(not near a computer so doing it from memory)
To set up the correct binary ROM files, go into the Commodore OS Settings manager whilst online.
Settings --> Commodore OS --> Commodore OS Settings
Go to Emulation Settings.
Go to Cloanto ROM setup
Choose the Cloanto 8-bit ROM setup.
Follow the procedure from Step 1 and have it download Commodore Forever Value edition for free.
All the ROMs will then be set up for all the emulators as they should.
If you discover that any game/demo emulation ROM files(Commodore 8-bit or Amiga) are not running when clicked it may be because they are not associated to the LOAD command.
Right click on the file and "choose other application" and then select any LOAD entry from the list, making it the default application going forward.
If there are issues please bring them up in the Emulation section of the site, as we can fix these things in ongoing updates.

Re: Cannot run C64 software on vice
Hi. I did all this and I get "Device not Present Error"
I am a brand new mini-itx build with Vision 3.0 and trying to get these emulators to work. They work with .crt files but not .t64 or any others.

Re: Cannot run C64 software on vice
Yes, the 8-bit system ROMs cannot be included in the distro as they are the property of Cloanto.
An open source system ROM has been included which will support BASIC but it does not include the Disk Drive rom.
Therefore disk images will not load, only cartridge images, as that goes straight into memory.
Please follow my advice in the post above, which will allow you to obtain, install and properly configure the Cloanto ROMs for free quite easily.

Re: Cannot run C64 software on vice
Thank you. I did do the above and it had a ton of errors. Could it be because I'm ONLY running vision 3.0 on my C64 clone? As I read somewhere, Cloanto is a windows app.LeoNigro wrote: ↑Sun May 04, 2025 6:25 am Yes, the 8-bit system ROMs cannot be included in the distro as they are the property of Cloanto.

Got it.....I ran the .msi through WINE and voila.NibbleNut wrote: ↑Sun May 04, 2025 5:04 pmThank you. I did do the above and it had a ton of errors. This also solved my commodore basic question elsewhere. Question before I get too far on that though....Since it's in the emulator, where can I save the .bas files to? I tried save "file.bas",8,1 which worked. I then got out of C64 and we[nt back in and file is gone. There is nowhere to attach a disk image.
Re: Cannot run C64 software on vice
Hold on a sec. You got C64 Forever to work through Wine????????
Are you sure?
I merely wanted you to run the Cloanto ROM setup available from the Settings manager with Commodore OS, which automates the download of C64 Forever and rips the various components it needs.
I've never seen C64 Forever running under Linux. Every time I tried it failed.
Maybe Wine has gained compatibility since.
Would you mind posting a picture?

Yup. The instructions above just gave me a bunch of errors so I though maybe I should run the .msi file first through wine and voila.

Re: Cannot run C64 software on vice
Nibblenut, I'm a mini-itx guy I've gone through the process of getting VICE running natively via the cloanto extraction, and also done a whole bunch of workarounds before that when the process wasn't quite working properly. If you still want to get that working, let me know and I am sure we can work it out.
