Commodore Vision OS3.0

Post by Enoch »

UPDATE: Have successfully installed OS3.0 Using Putty and plan on installing either or both SyncTERM or NetRunner after I figure out or get help with installation.

Hi,

Whilst I haven't installed OS3 yet is there any BBS software on this distro?

Cheers,

Enoch :-)

Hi All,
Commodore OS Vision just keeps getting better! Version 3.0 is really full of software that I'm just starting to explore. I'm very excited about the Commodore OS BASIC and the screen for it looks great.

I have installed Commodore OS Vision v3.0 on a Virtual Box VM. I had the drive size set at 85Gb for installation and it worked, but complained on startup about drive space only being 500Mb or so. I increased the drive size to 90Gb and no more messaging from the OS. I did not have to reinstall the OS, I used the File => Tools => Virtual Media Manager to expand the drive size to 90Gb. The OS used 73.19Gb actual of a 90Gb drive.

I can save the computer state once the OS is booted up, but when I re-enter the saved VM, it locks up. I have to shutdown and re-enter as a new boot and it works fine. I'm not sure if my settings are correct and I'm still investigating the cause.

I just wanted to share my installation experience on Virtual Box.

An unrelated side note, I tried the Applications => Programming => Commodore OS BASIC item on the menu, which experimental. I have some ideas for the Commodore Basic of the future. I have created my own 8-bit simulator(not an emulator) that has a Commodore BASIC feel. I created my own character set and kind of started from that point. You can PEEK and POKE characters onto the screen. The resolution can be anything, but 80 columns by 60 seems to be a good size. There is a graphics like mode for simple drawing of lines, circles, etc. I had to double the pixels from 1x1 to 2x2, because a modern display is too large and the 1x1 pixels are too small. Characters are supposed to be 8x8, but ended up 16x16. There is a border like the C64 and a background. There are about 150+ commands, I started with the Commodore 128 BASIC manual and added from there, not every command has been added from the C128. There are disks and IO commands, etc. I wanted to add tools that might be useful to a BASIC user, like when I was a kid and I could not figure out the C64. The programs are simple and can be saved, they are more like scripts of the BASIC like commands used. Memory is managed in an array of 8-bit locations with up to 2Mb of space this can be changed in the Processing/Java code. I mostly run on 146kb with ~1.9Mb unallocated. Unallocated space can be allocated with a command to expand into if a large text file is loaded. There are separate spaces for programs and general use RAM, but they all work off the single 2Mb memory array limit. I could go on and on...

I wrote the simulator in Processing Language and a little Java, so the IDE for Processing can be used to compile and run the simulator. I started programming on Windows 10 until Microsoft kept bothering me with upgrade notices, so I moved to Linux and continued development. Processing Language is based on Java, so it can run on either platform.

I have always wanted to add and change the C64 BASIC/computer and this simulator has allowed me to do that.
I own a C64 and C128. I run a number of VirtualBox emulators VICE, X16, Mega 65, Commodore OS, Apple II, MacPlus, HP48SX, TRS80 Model 100, Amiga WinUAE.

Wow, that's sounds amazing. I'd love to see a demo.

Leo,
I sent a private message, or at least I think I did.
We can meet and review the simulator.
