Logout and Login Password Issue

So i changed the default password from C= to something else. I logged out of the OS and tried to log back in and my new password would not work, neither would the default C= password.
I originally thought I had made a mistake on the password and changed the password during boot using the the "init=/bin/bash" command appended to the line beginning with "linux" and using some other commands was able to change the password.
On a reboot it logs back in automatically however.
And logging back out and trying to log back in it will not take my password.
Trying to change the password with passwd while logged in doesn't seem to work either.
The only way to log in if I use the logout option is to reboot. How do I actually change the password?
Side note, If while on the log in screen I change the user to root and use the password I created after the OS install, it works and I can log in.
