This type of retro-computing is going pretty far back in time. Back to 1983, in fact.

The game "Werewolves and Wanderer" is based upon a game of the same title as written by Tim Hartnell. It is from his book, "Creating Adventure Games on Your Computer," written in 1983. The text adventure game was originally programmed in BASIC, and the book is available online at atariarchives.org/adventure.

I discovered this book in the library at my Junior High School during the mid to late 80s. I read through the book and eventually created the game in C64 BASIC. That creation, unfortunately, is long gone now. But this book helped fuel my desire to create casual computer games ever since.

Bringing the game into the modern era was a fun project using BlitzMax. Although this game is based upon Tim Hartnell's book, alterations to the game, including a new Graphic User Interface, have been made along with some minor alterations.

I originally used BlitzMax on Microsoft Windows to create the game. BlitzMax is based upon BlitzBasic. BlitzMax enabled the game to be available on Windows, MacOS, and Linux, and BlitzMax also allowed a GUI to be created for the game. I was not too happy when Blitz Research decided to end development for BlitzMax. However, recently I updated the game and recompiled it on the new Commodore OS Vision 2 system with the new Open Source BlitzMax.

You can download the Commodore OS Vision version of the game Werewolves and Wanderer directly from here. Previous versions of the game for the other mentioned platforms can be downloaded from here.

This is a choose your own adventure (CYOA) type of game. The original Werewolves and Wanderers was an Interactive Fiction with command line interaction. Rather than command line interaction, I modernized it and converted it to a CYOA with an interactive graphic user interface for the game. The story text is in the left pane while an image of the room is at top-right and available choices are beneath the picture.

There are two bugs with this version. One is that the font is smaller than intended and the story pane (on the left) has to be manually scrolled each time an action is taken in order to read the new story text. Currently working on these two issues, but the game is playable nonetheless.

Happy computing!
