How to install MakeMKV (solved)

Post by lexi »

In a solved topic Bruce asked "Any idea how to play Blueray or to install MakeMKV?"
see - https://forum.commodoreos.net/viewtopic.php?p=217#p217

When I saw this question from Bruce I had no idea what MakeMKV was or why I might need it, well as it turned out now I know. I have a Blu Ray UHD of Top Gun Maverick and wanted to play it for sometime without the right physical BD player. So long story short I bought a new LG BU40N blu ray UHD drive and now have a working Blu Ray and UHD player on my C64x running CommodoreOS. It happily runs Blu Ray and UHD discs with a combo of MakeMKV and VLC.

To install MakeMKV on CommodoreOS
There is no package available so you need to download the source code files and compile on CommodoreOS, which is not that difficult to do.
Follow this link from the MakeMKV forum
https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=224

It's good instructions, but it assumes knowledge of extracting the files from the two archive files you download, and also does not mention you need to cd or go into the extracted folders before running the commands. If requested I can drop a full set of commands to get you up and running. While some might know Linux inside out others may be coming here to CommodoreOS and not knowing where to start.

Once both sets of source codes files have been compiled and installed, you just need to type in 'makemkv' on the command line to run it.

Integration with VLC for playing Blu Ray and UHD discs
1. Open command line interface to get a terminal window (it can be found in Cairo dock at the bottom of the screen)
2. type in 'makemkv' and press enter
3. Insert Bluray disc of choice into your drive (order of this doesnt matter, so long as you do before next step)
4. Once MakeMKV has loaded, select the menu, File - Open Disc and name of the disc you want to watch, or simply click the disc icon image to perform an analysis of the disc by MakeMKV (you only need to do this once, if done already skip this step)
5. Open VLC media player from the Application Menu -> Sound & Video (it can be found in Cairo dock at the bottom of the screen)
6. Once VLC has loaded, select the menu, Media -> Open Disc.
7. Under the Disc tab, select Blu-Ray and click Play

Enjoy your Blu Ray movie experience!
