Alternative OS for your Extreme
While Commodore OS Is a brilliant Linux distro (i have it installed on a few laptops) I have now installed Linux Lite on my extreme and have to say it runs brilliantly. It does not have the wealth of apps that are available in commodore OS but you can have fun installing the ones you need on Linux lite. Very easy to use and its Debian based Oh and I can recommend the latest Chat Gpt 4o as an assistant for your Linux journey. It's expensive @ 20 quid a month but it it's like having a Linux guru right there beside you ... awesome .... Right time to setup up my C64 emulator

Just a quick reply - while GPT 4o is great, do make sure that you don't follow it as you would with information from the Arch Linux Wiki or Stack Overflow...
Sometimes GPT will suggest 'fixes' that will completely bork a system. For example, one user running Proxmox and attempting to get a Proxmox cluster running wanted to revert back to a non-cluster... GPT suggested several things to try, but after the suggested fixes didn't work it offered a set of commands - one that included:
rm -rf /etc/pve
... and sure, it 'worked' - but the user also just killed their entire Proxmox (and all VMs) configuration files. Don't ask me who that user was... I met him on some shady internet forums.

Excellent reply paulie420, thanks.
Yes it is important to note that ChatGPt is not always right. But it is like having a super clever buddy (Who also thinks he is always right ) Always clarify what chat GPT responds with. At the very least using ChatGpt can point you in the right direction to complete your tasks.

Re: Alternative OS for your Extreme
I backed up my COS. I love this machine, but I grew up on Apple IIe's. But I always wanted an Apple IIgs. So, for the past month I've been building a custom LFS build, (in the works, BLFS is a challenge) and I want to configure it so it looks like a Commodore, but boots to a IIgs screen. (using an emulator and optimized custom X windows build. This thing boots so fast, and with a little trickery, I am hoping to hide or outrun most of the host OS boot stuff, (goal is all of it.) so there is as little delay from power on to GS startup. It already gets started faster then my monitor can show, so, if GRUB was instant start and I can trim down the Kernel and Windows start to the absolute minimum, I might get most of what I want.
Another of my goals is, the IIe/IIgs had 7 ports, I want to hack the emulator to recognize PR#8 and reboot the system to a normal OS startup. I will move COS there. I want to have lots of fun like that with this thing. Maybe even make these optional and have OG c64 startup as an option, something configurable.
Oh, as for the other conversation about Chat GPT, yea, never trust it. It's a good tool, but it always assumes it knows things when in actuality it's just guessing much of the time. if its answers look sketchy, it's likely because it is. it's a tool, not a How-to. I've had it do some genius stiff, and also it drools on your keyboard when it goes stupid mode.
