Commodore OS Tweaking

Post by LeoNigro »

Some reviews have commented that Commodore OS is perfect with a couple of modifications.
This is great to hear, but it makes me wonder what is actually the issue?
I imagine this has to do with removing some of the animations, in order for menus to be more responsive.

What modifications have you performed to tailor Commodore OS more to your liking?

I could make it an option on initial installation that you can pick from two or three different user desktop presets that change the experience.

The preset idea sounds nice.

I have been playing with it a little bit (and yes I'm kinda new to linux) and haven't really modded it that much only crashed it several times. :)

Working with the cairo dock I have noticed it will, when adding certain programs, switch to a different program. The most recent was adding the command line program. I switched it to one of the Doom games which was actually kind of nice except I have wasted way to much time playing it.

Once again thank you for this OS!!!

Not much I can do about Cairo dock's behavior in COS3 I'm afraid, other than lock it down because configuring it can kill it practically irreversably.
I also found it crashes every so often, and even sometimes tries to run two instances.
I actually had to code something to either resuscitate it or kill instances (triggered when you open practically any app from the menu).
So, if you find yourself without the dock, run practically any app(from the top menu) and will return.

I guess, I could have written a process to run in the background....but that's just another thing.

Well not sure if this is the place to put it but as you speak about Cairo i also wanted to say something about that.

So first of all my wifi does not always work when i startup , cant seem to connect it either. I have to restart Cos and then it will work.

So the Cairo thing i found that yeah i cant edit the menu items strait away but when i startup another dock then with some fiddling (to try to right click on the new one) i can then add and change things in the settings. Just save it and restart Cos and it works. Don´t know if it helps.

I would imagine the wifi problem would be an issue with linux in general. We use the same linux kernel as Debian, the linux gran daddy.
Compatability with wifi devices tends to be a problem with Linux unfortunately. I've got the same problem with wifi USB dongles.
I recently had to return a bunch that claimed they were linux compatible.
If anyone knows a fairly cheap one on amazon that actually works out the box and doesn't require you to compile the driver let me know.
In the meantime, I've been using a network cable over the house power lines, but my adapters are old and aren't too fast.

I lock Compiz down because you can easily bork it for good in the settings, which I quickly discovered.
To unlock, simply kill the cairo process instance in the system manager.
Then open a terminal (Control + ALT + T) and simply type "cairo &".
Then be careful in the settings as its easy to get lost in the config and get it stuck a certain way.
Also I would recommend staying away from the weather widget, which did nothing but cause me grief.

Ow hey thanks, ill try that one next time i want to add something. Seems way easier then my way lol.
Yeah i messed up the bar once lol. Got it back as the Cos one by looking at another pc when i had it installed there.

I am finding my way thru Linux bit by bit. I do want to say that for me this is by far the nicest Linux i tried . Mint is also nice . But as this has the Commodore theme and Compiz out of the box makes it Nr1 heh

Just for the sake of it i tried your way to enter in the settings from Cairo but or i am doing something wrong or it doesn't work. I close Cairo as you say ,then use the Cairo & and Cairo starts up again but i cant enter in the settings. However as said if i start another Cairo dock i can on the new one (with the old one running) Oh well i don´t need to enter it a lot so its good for me.

Hmmmm. Maybe my instructions were off somewhere as I wasn't near a computer at the time to test.

I should put something in the settings manager that optionally unlocks Cairo Dock. Thanks.

Ah, here's the problem.

It's cairo-dock not cairo. Doah!!! Sorry about that.

To unlock, simply kill the "cairo-dock" process instance in the system manager (EDIT: "System Monitor" ).
Then open a terminal (Control + ALT + T) and type "cairo-dock &".

And then when you right click on the dock you will be able to select the option to configure it.
